The Pain Has Made Me Depressed, Or So I've Been Told

Have you been in a funk, not understanding the reason for your bad moods and lack of energy? Are you isolating yourself from others because you never know how you will feel from moment to moment? Have you noticed that friends and family members have backed away from spending time with you? Is living from day-to-day becoming more and more of a burden, with no light in sight? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, you may be experiencing a medical illness known as depression.

I believe that Chronic pain can make us feel isolated and helpless, especially if its cause is an illness or physical condition for which there's no cure or effective medical treatment. At times of deepest despair, finding ways to nurture our spirits can help us not only cope with the pain, but also discover nuggets of grace, comfort, and productivity that can move us through and beyond the helplessness and hopelessness we feel.

When we are in great pain, finding true peace and comfort is not easy. But it is possible, if we first try to still our worries and fears, both external and internal. Finding a place where there are no noisy distractions is a great start. Enjoying the outward quiet, we can then calm our inner selves and nurture peace within

Chronic headaches can interfere with your relationships, damage your career, and prevent you from reaching your full potential. If you are not getting relief from conventional treatments, hypnosis may be the answer. Numerous clinical trials over the past 30 years have shown hypnosis to be an effective treatment for many types of chronic headaches.

A beautiful piece of music can inspire our spirits and soothe our pain like no other sound. It can also help us get in touch with the absolute joy of living, even if we live with severe pain. Put on your favorite piece of music - instrumental or vocal - sit back, and close your eyes. Let the music carry you away from your immediate pain to a place of calm.

The benefits of a daily exercise regimen can't be overlooked in our battle against most of the chronic pains that we endure. Keeping our body in shape and giving the cells the proper of food and energy helps our bodies as they fight back against the pain that ravages us. I know that when you are hurting the last thing you want to do is move around but if you can fight thru it and at least make a minimal effort everyday to exercise, you will see the benefits.

Don't get carried away with your exercises now. Be sure to see YOUR doctor before you begin any exercise or diet regimen and always follow their advice. In the beginning the best step is a little step and then build from there. Don't get discouraged that you can't run and jump like you once did and keep in mind that you are in one of the toughest fights you will ever be in when you battle severe pains. I found that it helps if you can get a family member or friend to go along with you as you exercise. Whatever it is that you have to do to motivate yourself to get started and keep going, please do it. I have found that I am able to maintain my weight and on days when I have the most severe pain flareups I have been able to bounce back much quicker since I began my exercise regimen several months ago.

Contributor's Note

As I battle chronic pain in my daily life and learn new limitations, I find relief in sharing my experiences with anybody who wishes to read them. I can only hope that perhaps they may find something that can be of use to them and maybe they too will begin to share their experiences which might just help somebody else, including me.
